TweetMeme Is Good For Business

Since Twitter has reared its popular head around the web, there seem to be more chicklets (A chicklet is a feed button that normally contains a feed reader logo and has a specific blog or feed information attached to it. It is coded to easily allow users to subscribe to a feed), plug-ins , buttons and widgets than you can poke a stick at! One in particular that you may have noticed popping up on many a blog or website is the ReTweet button!

The ReTweet button (FYI – ReTweets are like personal recommendations of valued information on Twitter) and the TweetMeme aggregator service are very nifty little tools for the savvy social marketer and are slowly gaining popularity around the webisphere!  Together, they are the brain child of a web company called fav.or.it, located in London, who says that they are passionate about Twitter, Social Media and whole lot more!  I tend to agree with them.

What the site developers believe the purpose of their site is.

“TweetMeme is a service which aggregates all the popular links on Twitter to determine which links are popular. TweetMeme categorises these links into Categories, Subcategories and Channels, making it easy to filter out the noise to find what you’re interested in.”

How easy it is to open an account, use the site and what does it cost?

Joining and using TweetMeme is as free and simple as logging into Twitter! You will, obviously need a Twitter account up and running to use this service, however, if you do not have one they will happily redirect you through to Twitter to sign up (also free).

The site is very simple to use and has a familiar aggregator layout and feel to it, so if you are comfortable  using feed readers and twitter – it should take you no time at all to get tweetmeme”ing”.

Will this site bend the time space continuum to suck my valuable time into a vortex?

No … well it shouldn’t (warningonline aggregator addiction could be an ugly side affect of using this site). This site, like any other aggregator platform (e.g. Digg, Feed Burner, Google Reader, etc) is purely a place for you to categorise your interests and find what you need quickly, with less noise and clutter.

How can I use this site to benefit my business?

The TweetMeme site not only acts as an excellent aggregator service, the team behind the site is also the brain child behind the ReTweet button that you would have seen on many blogs and websites.

Different ways to take advantage of TweetMeme and the ReTweet button:

  • Using the TweetMeme button you can discover new content and tweet about it, allowing you to get valuable information to your followers in real time.
  • The button provides a fully integrated URL shortener and the title of the story on each page.
  • Each link that is posted to Twitter adds one ‘vote’ to the tweet count for that story, the more ‘votes’ or retweets you get the more people are likely to be interested in what you have to say and then retweet it themselves.
  • If a story gets enough tweets (or as they say, “reaches critical mass”) then it makes it into their top 10 on the front page of TweetMeme and receives a tweet through the TweetMeme account. (If you get on the front page of TweetMeme you can be seen by millions of web users, a great way to increase your brand presence and online credibility)
  • Each story on the TweetMeme website has its own retweet button which integrates both the current number of tweets that a story has, and easily allows you ReTweet the link through your Twitter account. (Kind of like having double the ReTweet power, i.e. you get twice as many opportunities for people to retweet or recommend your information.)
  • Once again, the conversation is as important as the information. You can leave comments on every story featured on TweetMeme, with the option of retweeting the best comments out to the Twittersphere (yet another opportunity to provide value and confirm credibility).
  • Searching on the site is handy too! You can look for stories posted on Twitter, and discover and share new content – whether you wrote it or not!
  • By installing the retweet button on your blog or website, you can allow your readers to easily share your information and ReTweet them direct from your site.

The Skinny!

This is a simple and easy to use website, with a fantastic tool that every business owner who blogs or posts information online should be using.

It integrates with almost every platform (e.g. Wordpress, Blogger, etc) and will take next to no time for your web developer to add it to your site. Once it is there, it becomes an automatic generator for your content to the world!

There is no perfect formula to get people to ReTweet your posts, however as always, if you provide good quality information that is relevant and appealing, you can use this online vehicle to drive quality traffic to your Twitter account, which will in turn direct users to your blog and website.

The Biz on Twitter

Cheecky Tweeter

As anyone who reads this blog will know, I am a big fan (convert) of Twitter, one of the many reasons includes the fact that co-founder, Biz Stone, never gets too big to send a hello via email!

For those of you who are not on the Twitter mailing list, I thought I would share with you the update Biz Stone emailed this morning!

“Hi there,

In the early days of Twitter, I used to send out short updates just to keep everyone in the loop since so much was happening. It’s been a while, but you signed up for short, monthly updates from Twitter so we thought it was time to start sharing more information. We’ve had quite a year. If you haven’t visited in a while, we’d like to invite you to come have a look at http://twitter.com — we’ve been busy!

Growing Up
In the course of a year, registered Twitter accounts have grown more than 1,500% and our team has grown 500%. Recently, we hired our 140th employee! His name is Aaron and he’s an engineer focused on building internal tools to help promote productivity, communication, and support within our company. We celebrated with a little dance party.

Features of Note
Some features of note that we released over the course of a year include the ability to create lists, quickly spread information with a retweet button, and an easier way to activate your mobile phone to work with Twitter over SMS. We also built a new mobile web site that looks and works much better on smart phones.

Feeling Inspired
By working together during critical times when others needed help, sharing important information that otherwise might not make the news, and inventing new and interesting ways to use Twitter, you’ve shown us that Twitter is more than a triumph of technology — it is a triumph of humanity. Projects like Fledgling and Hope140 were inspired by you.

Chirp!
While there may only be 140 full-time employees working at the Twitter offices, there are thousands of dedicated platform developers who have now created more than 70,000 registered Twitter applications creating variety and utility for all of us. We’ll be gathering this spring at Chirp, our first ever official Twitter developer conference.

Thanks,
Biz Stone, Co-founder (@Biz)
Twitter, Inc.”

Thanks Biz – getting a special fuzzy feeling that one of only millions of your subscribers could experience!

Lost in Translation

The colloquial language may mean that a newbie (n00b / noob / newb / nub: a slang term for a newcomer to an Internet activity) could be potentially lost in a maze of strange and unfamiliar words and acronyms.

If you are already breaking out into a cold sweat at the mere mention of IT acronyms, or wondering how you will ever get your head around it all, don’t worry – you are not alone!

Everyone goes through this period in the beginning and to be honest, with the rapid rate of change; pretty much everyone (outside of those who live and breathe digitally) stays a newbie in some form or another!

However, to help make your initial transition easier, visit our glossary of terms and acronyms and become a whizz at the digital lingo!

And Then There Were Lists ….

The now well recognised Twitter Lists feature is a great way to organize the people you’re following on Twitter, or find new people. In reality these lists are actually Twitter’s version of a “groups” feature, offering an easy way to cluster other users on Twitter into groups allowing you to get an overarching view of what they are up to without having to filter through your vast followers list or visiting each and every profile.

Lists are not just static listings of users, rather compilations of feeds from a specified set of users that you choose. What this means is that you can create a live feeding snapshot of the tweets from your users by viewing a specific list’s page. Lists are a great way of organising the people you are following into topic based groups. Lists also have the great benefit of allowing you to include people that you are not following!

There is a whole swag of reasons for developing your own set of lists and you can make your lists public or private to accommodate your varying needs.

Below are some tips on how to use lists:

Follow Industry Leader Trends
Lists are a great way to follow leaders in your industry to find out what they are tweeting about, ensuring you stay at the top of your game and up to date for your clients.  For example we have created a list of our industry leading “look to” tweeters on social media http://twitter.com/#/list/ISPMedia/getsocial

Create a Topic Focused Group
Create private or public lists so you can follow topics of interest, for example, ISP Media has created a public list called http://twitter.com/home#/list/ISPMedia/webwisdom which follows our favourite web wisdom providers. A topic can be anything you want, i.e. friends, co-workers, hobbies, family or employees.

Perform The Sneaky Follow
Something I personally love about lists is the sneaky follow, what I mean is that you do not have to be following someone to include their feed in your list! Brilliant right? This is particularly useful for the over achiever tweeter, i.e.  the person who does provide great tweets … just too many or in huge batches with no spacing! By adding them to your list your main feed is not clogged and you can check in on them within your list when you want to, or have time to wade through their 400 daily tweets!

Recommend Your Favourite Tweeps
A major reason for lists was to allow people to recommend other users to follow, by placing your favourite tweeps in a list and making it public, you are basically recommending them to anyone who is interested. People who visit can choose to follow the list or the individual Tweep!

Those of you who know me will be expecting this, become a voyeur first if you are unsure or new to lists! Take the time to follow a few lists and watch how they work before you leap in. then shed your baby feathers and start listing like there is no tomorrow!

It is a really great way to filter the massive influx of information that you receive through Twitter!

Lists Ahoy!

Something I would like to share with you all is a great experience I had earlier today!

I was recently profiled as Feature Member by the Womens Network Australia (Yay for me!) and from that I received a wonderful email from a fellow WNA networker!

Natalie and I chatted away over email (fabulous lady), we snuk a peek at each others websites and blogs, discovered shared interests and discussed working together in the future! All in all a great connection and wonderful new contact.

That is not the only exciting thing though… later as I was scrolling through my tweets, I noticed a call out from a follower who was looking for a good copywriter / editor to assist with a long term contract! I immediately thought of Natalie and supplied her details to Cam! They were instantly connected and have set up a meeting to catch up next week to discuss the contract!

How amazing is that!

I just wanted to share that with you all in case there was anyone out there who still thinks that Twitter (or networking for that matter) is not a useful business tool!

Have a fantastic remainder of your day!
